Assessment and Reporting

Understanding Assessment & Reporting

Twenty years of education research has resulted in the knowledge that assessment can be used to improve student learning as well. Sound assessment practices are based on the principle that assessment of the academic performance of our students is an ongoing process through the collection and grading of student work that is both formative and summative. Teachers assess student growth and development in variou

s subject areas through classroom participation, oral and written work, collaborative projects, test results, quality of assignments produced, homework completion and notebook maintenance. Parents play an important role in their child’s education; when parents, students and educators work together, students are successful! In the past, assessment had been used solely for the purpose of calculating overall final grades.

The information below, as well as the video provides additional information for parents related to the assessment and reporting of students progress.  Click on the picture below to access the full document.

Levels of Achievement (LOA) for Elementary

In January and June students will be assigned Levels of Achievement for the learning outcomes related to the Alberta Kindergarten Program of Studies.

Levels of Achievement for students in grades K-6 are non-numeric in nature. Their progress is reported using levels of achievement to indicate a student’s level of performance, in relation to the learning objectives from the Programs of Study.

For the Grades 1-6 (Levels of Achievement LOA) refer to the chart below.

Levels of Achievement Criteria with Percentages
Levels of achievement for students in Kindergarten differ from those used in grades 1 through 12. For our youngest learners, it takes time to develop mastery of foundational skills. As such, we expect that there may be times when your child is still working on developing these important concepts.

For the Kindergarten (Levels of Achievement LOA) refer to the chart below.

Report Cards

Over the past 3 years our District moved to an online system of reporting.  Our District has standardized the reporting of student progress two times per academic school year; January & June. For our reporting dates here at St. John Bosco School, please see below.

Student progress will be formally reported to parents two times a year in the form of a summary report card in both January and June.

September -January Report Card on January 31, 2025
February- June Report Card on June 25, 2025

Parents will be able to go into the PowerSchool Parent Portal and see their child’s summary report card for the term. Parents can choose to view in digital format or print a hardcopy as they wish. Should you have any questions related to your child’s progress, we encourage you to reach out to their teacher.

Demonstration of Learning

Teachers we will share your child’s progress through a variety of means such as student work sent home, student portfolios, home/school conferences, and demonstration of learning, to name a few.

Demonstration of Learning: November 28, 2024
Demonstration of Learning: March 13, 2025
