Literacy Screeners
Students in grades K-6 will complete reading screeners during the 2022-2023 school year. Kindergarten children complete their screener in January, grade 1 students complete their screeners in January and June, and grades 2-6 students complete their screeners in September and June. These screeners assess a student’s understanding of letter sound relationships, word reading, and comprehension. This data is critical in helping teachers plan for targeted classroom instruction. Families are encouraged to connect with their child’s teacher throughout the year and during Demonstration of Learning to discuss student results and the information gathered from the screeners.
Numeracy Screeners
Provincial Numeracy Screeners are administered to all students in Grades 1 - 3, as per provincial requirement. In Edmonton Catholic Schools we have also opted to administer these screeners to all students in Grade 4 as well, as these screeners provide valuable information. The Numeracy Screeners administered are not aligned with the Alberta Mathematics curriculum but are rooted in research in mathematical development. These screeners are administered in the early fall, with the results of this administration utilized to help teachers identify gaps in students' foundational understanding of numbers. This information is then utilized to inform classroom practice and guide instruction.
Provincial Numeracy Screeners are administered a second time in the late spring to measure student progress over the year.

Mathematics Screener Assessment Tool (MAST)
The MAST is an assessment that is administered to students in Grades 5 and 6 in the fall, and to children in Kindergarten in January. This assessment tool is aligned to the Alberta Mathematics curriculum. Information from the fall administration of the MAST is utilized to inform classroom practice and guide instruction.
In the late spring, a summative MAST is administered to students in Grade 1 through 5. This summative assessment can be utilized by teachers for reporting purposes and serves to act as a final assessment that teachers can utilize to determine student growth and development in mathematics. Information from this summative spring MAST is also utilized to support transitions in the fall and to inform classroom practice and guide instruction.
