Learning/Library Commons

Learning Commons Policy Statement by Alberta Education:

"To support students in attaining the goals and standards as stated in the Ministerial Order on Student Learning school authorities must ensure that students have access to a learning commons. A learning commons is an inclusive, flexible, learner- centered, physical and/or virtual space for collaboration, inquiry, imagination and play to expand and deepen learning."

In keeping with the eight competencies in the Ministerial Order on Student Learning (#001/2013) the Learning Commons is an area of student engagement and will help foster independent learning.

Alberta Education Eight Competencies

Competencies are combinations of knowledge, skills and attitudes that students develop and apply for successful learning, living and working. They emphasize aspects of learning that apply within and across all subject areas.

St. John Bosco School Learning/Library Commons

The St. John Bosco School Learning Commons is a dynamic and fluid space used as a second classroom, promoting inquiry based learning.  It is intended to facilitate and provide a variety of multi-modal learning opportunities for students.  This will further develop and foster student collaboration, inquiry-based learning and cross-curricular activities.  This space also provides a larger area whereby teachers can collaborate on projects in multi-age groupings. Staff and students can access information, share space for information technology and content application.  It is a space that promotes critical and creative thinking, communication and collaborative problem solving.  

Our Learning Commons is flexible, student-centered and inclusive to all and attends to a variety of learning styles.
